[TV] Re: Removing the Coating on the back of a picture tube possible?
Hello,
Do you plan on having it operational?
If so it should degrade picture quality depending on how much you remove.
The coating acts as a capacitor plate stablizing high voltage.
Also most of both sides are coated.
I just broke one 32 inch to toss it away.
I was not looking for what you wanted to know and it would be hard to tell
from all the little pieces.
A black and white tube may have less coatings but no mask too.
The coating does scrape off but don't cause it to implode by scratching
glass.
If not operating break the little tip where they evacuate it to let the air
in to make safer.
You may concider getting literature from the manufacturers showing cross
section of tube for promotional purposes.
Good luck and be carefull the glass can fly 20 feet or so if you break one.
