Normally they should recognize the disc in 10 seconds or less.  Try a cd also.  
I've had several that were ok with cds but not dvds.  If you have a loading 
problem you have to get the laser mechanism as it's sold as the whole drive.  
I'm a warranty center and I about choked when I looked one up for an out of 
warranty repair for a vhs/dvd unit.  They wanted $140 out of it.  I'm betting 
they are out of stock and they price them so they never have to stock them 
again.
