[TV] Just sharing

I figured something out today that I just had to share. Hope it helps some
of you who have helped me.

I've had several of the late model DVD(DVR) / VCR combos come in lately with
the bad (weak) IR LED emitter, symptom of shutdown on tape play -or- basket
pulls in with no tape present, etc. I've been estimating them based on the
time it takes to completely GUT the sucker to get to and change the LED. If
you've done one lately, you know what I mean, EVERYTHING has to come out to
get to it.

Well, check this out. On your next one, simply take off the top cover and
take out the prism (one whole screw). Now, measure over where the LED is
from side and front, flip the unit over and make a mark on the bottom of the
case where it's at. Next, take your dremel tool with cutoff disc and cut
out a little one inch or so square hole (just make four straight cuts, be
careful not to go too deep). Unsolder the LED and it'll drop out on the
bench. Drop in a new LED from the top side, then back underneath and solder
it up, trim the leads, now apply a couple layers of metal tape to cover the
hole (got some from my heat and air guy, it's good stuff, use it for
grounding tape too). Put the prism and cover back on and you're done. Just
turned a half hour job into a five minute deal, without all the possiblities
of whatever going wrong with all the disassembly.

I used to get the LED's by the 10 bag back when we were putting them in the
TV combos. Lately I haven't been able to find them except for part #
X480195, $3.50 each. Anybody know of a better source/price ?
